This quick blog arises from the need to rectify the terminology used or misused when people talk about Pods and Capsules. More and more frequently we have people ringing and asking about “Pods”. Unfortunately due to main stream marketing the first deciphering question that we need to ask is… “Are you talking about coffee capsules (yeah the George Clooney ones) or coffee pods (You know the E.S.E. Paper Pods)”? Once we have established we are (or not) talking about the same product then business as usual. Gourmet Gold Coffee hopes the brief information below helps to clarify the situation.

What are E.S.E. Paper Pods and how do they differ from the conventional coffee capsule?

E.S.E. (Easy Serving Espresso) Paper Pods are the result of technology simplifying the preparation of a good espresso. Each “serving” comprises of an individual pre-packed dose containing 7 grams of ground coffee, (which has also been pressed and hermetically sealed between two fine layers of biodegradable filter paper). If we compare this serving system to the typical main stream coffee capsule (the ones that the iconic George Clooney associates his image with, and unfortunately many members of the public still associate the word “Pod” with we can discover some major differences worth mentioning:

  • The 1st and most important being “E.S.E.” Paper Pods, unlike the conventional coffee pods, are 100% Compostable. More information on compostability here.
  • The 2nd being that “E.S.E. Paper Pods” unlike the conventional coffee pods (Capsules) contain 7 grams of freshly ground coffee in a single serve which works out to be roughly 40% more coffee than the 5 grams of coffee found in your single serve conventional coffee capsules. You can imagine the effect 40% more coffee will have on taste and cost per cup. E.S.E Paper Pods are also available in 10 gram (commercial pods) and 14 gram double serves. For more information please contact us.
  • The 3rd major difference is that E.S.E. Paper Pods have a compatibility advantage over the conventional coffee pod. E.S.E. Paper Pods is an international industrial standard meaning unlike the conventional coffee pod it is the only “open” system which is available to the sector for espresso coffee prepared with paper pods. What does this mean for the end user? Simply put… Freedom of choice in terms of brands and models with various price ranges. For more information about which domestic and commercial coffee machines are compatible with E.S.E. Paper Pods please contact us here.

So there you have it, 3 major differences between E.S.E. Paper Pods and the conventional coffee capsule. We hope for future reference this helps to differentiate between the two systems. Please remember that no matter how good any pre-packaged coffee system can be, you can never beat freshly ground coffee in terms of taste and aroma. In saying that though, here at Gourmet Gold Coffee we cater for both premium freshly hand roasted coffee and also the E.S.E. Paper Coffee Pods for a deskilled and convenience driven client.

If you found this blog useful, please feel free to share the information with your friends and family and if you have any questions or would like more information about the possibilities of using the E.S.E. Paper Pods system in your home or business we have more information here or you can contact us here for a friendly chat.
